As a professional in a field such as massage therapy or bodywork, where helping people feel better is the main goal, wondering whether your practice itself is safe may be the last thing on your mind. However, what Massage Therapists and bodyworkers must remember is the fact that, at the end of the day, a hands on practice is still a business, just like any other place where goods or services are exchanged for money.

Therefore, like any other place of business where customers come and go, a massage therapy or bodywork practice must ensure a basic level of safety for all those who on the property, in order to avoid the kinds of accidents or injuries that might result in a lawsuit. What many massage therapists and bodyworkers choose to do is craft a safety checklist for their practices, which they go over at specific times, such as before and after each client or at the beginning, middle and end of each day. As an example, items on your safety checklist might include making sure both the indoor and outdoor walkways are free of any obstacles or spills; blowing out candles and checking on burning candles periodically; testing out the integrity of the massage table; and keeping an eye on the temperature and actual feel of any heated products, such as stones, towels or cushions.

These are only a few examples of some of the common safety concerns that might need to be tended to at a massage therapy or bodywork practice. Of course, some safety issues may need to be considered more or less often than others. For instance, you may not need to check the integrity of your massage table before and after every client, but rather once a month.

Making sure your place of business is a safe one for every client who comes through the door is simply a basic tenet of good business, no matter what your line of work. Do not be distracted by the fact that your sole aim is to enhance the health and wellness of your clients. This does not, in and of itself, make your practice a safe place, so keep up with that safety checklist.

Of course, even with a thorough structure in place to maintain the safety of your massage therapy or bodywork business, unexpected scenarios may still happen—that’s what makes them so unexpected. This is why you need to have a solid Massage Therapy Liability Insurance policy, to back up your safety measures and cover you in case something happens that you could not predict or prevent.
